Jacob Javits Law
Welcome to the Jacob Javits Law Academy at Francis Lewis High School. This law academy is a unique program for high school students, grades 9 through 12. At the Jacob Javits Law Academy, you will have an opportunity to learn about law in a way that will be of practical use to you. The courses are designed to provide you with an understanding of your legal rights, responsibilities and knowledge of everyday legal problems. It will also provide you with the ability to analyze, evaluate and resolve legal controversies.
One key benefit of joining the law program is the opportunity to earn up to nine college credits by the time you graduate through our partnerships with SUNY Farmingdale and CUNY Queens. Students also have the opportunity to earn the Seal of Civic Readiness on their diploma as a unique distinction indicating that they are informed and active members of their community.
Our approach to law related education includes case studies, mock trials, debates and role-playing. The Academy utilizes community experiences such as court tours and guest speakers, including judges, attorneys and officers of the law. We have an affiliation with the Manhattan law firm of Proskauer Rose, LLP, who assist students in preparing for Moot Court competitions. Many of the Academy students are also placed in prestigious law internships, including the Sonia and Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program and Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program with the New York City Bar Association.
Upon completion of the required number of courses and activities, students will receive a certificate in law-related education and nine college credits.
