Social Media Policy
Francis Lewis HS Social Media Policy
The ability to use social media anonymously is the most destructive and dangerous challenge that society has faced, possibly ever, in our opinion. Many children have died around the country because of online bullying and harassment. Collectively, we all now have the responsibility to make sure that the virtual world, in which students are spending an incredible amount time socializing, is safe and secure.
At Francis Lewis HS, being an active participant or even a passive follower of a known bullying/harassment account is considered a violation of our Social Media Policy and will subject the student to disciplinary consequences.
Being a passive follower of a bullying site makes you a part of the bullying problem. If you are identified as a passive follower of a known bullying/harassment site, you will be notified and warned to stop following the site without consequence. If after this first intervention the student refuses to stop following any of these sites (as they may very well choose to exercise their First Amendment rights), Francis Lewis begin disciplinary procedures that could possibly result in the school withholding a recommendation to college or work (which is within our rights). We are asking you to stop following these types of accounts immediately.
If anyone ever has any information that helps identify the owner/owners of the bullying/harassment accounts, please come to room 105 and report immediately. The information will remain anonymous, and you will receive an appropriate award for doing the right thing.
We are aware that the above steps are serious and dramatic. The problem warrants it; this is a matter of life and death.
