Our Mission

The FLHS English Language Arts and Library Department offer four years of Next Generation Learning Standards aligned curricula designed to prepare students for college and careers. Including a blend of fiction and informational texts, our curriculum helps students explore critical societal issues and themes as they develop reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills. Students engage in four years of NGS-aligned research curriculum to prepare them with the research and informational technology skills necessary to succeed in the 21st Century. Utilizing Schoolwide Protocols, students develop Advanced Literacies: "the skills and competencies that enable communication in increasingly diverse ways and promote the understanding and use of text for a variety of purposes" (NYSED). We also offer a three-year elective sequence in our award-winning Journalism Academy.

In their sophomore, junior, and senior years, our students have opportunities to challenge themselves with rigorous coursework in our Advanced Placement courses: AP Seminar, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature and Composition. Juniors and seniors also have an opportunity to take college classes to earn college credit.

Informed by research and best practices in education, our curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Learning Standards, the NYCDOE Instructional Leadership Framework, NYS Advanced Literacy guidelines, NYS Social Emotional Learning Framework, and the NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework.
